Introducing CASE: a multi-functional, pre-fabricated hardwood cassette

ASH Blog article titled, Introducing CASE: a multi-functional, pre-fabricated hardwood cassette

CASE by Australian Sustainable Hardwoods (ASH) is a pre-fabricated hardwood cassette that combines structure, insulation, and finished lining in a single panel. Walls, floors, and ceilings are delivered ready to install.

The honest building

Most buildings hide their structure behind layers of plasterboard, battens, and applied finishes. CASE inverts that logic. The structural panel is the finished surface.

Refined Tasmanian Oak linings are integrated directly into the cassette during manufacture. When the panel goes up, the interior is already there, warm, tactile hardwood ready for the life of the building. No plasterboard. No painting. Minimal finishing trades.

For architects, this means something rare: the ability to expose a building’s bones and make them beautiful. Structure becomes architecture. The layers you normally coordinate and conceal become the elements worth showing.

Faster to lock up

CASE panels arrive on site factory-cut, pre-insulated, and lined. A single lift resolves what traditionally takes multiple trades, multiple weeks to complete: framing, insulation, vapour management, lining, and finishing.

The result is a dramatically compressed programme from frame to lock-up. Fewer trades on site means fewer coordination headaches, less waste, and less opportunity for design intent to drift during construction. ASH lean on our extensive experience in mass timber, helping speed up construction sites by 30%.

Performance built in

Insulation is not an afterthought in CASE, it’s integral to the panel. The cassette assembly achieves NCC 2022 compliance across climate zones 5–7.

Because every panel is manufactured under controlled factory conditions, tolerances are tighter, and air gaps are minimised. The performance you design is the performance you get, not an approximation of it.

Australian hardwood, not softwood

CASE is built from sustainably sourced Australian hardwood, not the imported softwood that dominates timber systems globally.

ASH’s manufacturing process takes hardwood fibre that didn’t make structural F17 grade material that would otherwise be exported as a commodity and, through parallel lamination and box-beam engineering, produces panels that exceed what F17 alone can deliver. It’s a genuine upgrade of a by-product into a high-performance building product.

The result is a building system grown, designed, and manufactured in Australia. Hardwood that lasts for generations, with lower embodied carbon than steel or concrete alternatives.

How CASE works

At the core of CASE is parallel laminated timber (PLT) hardwood boards laminated with all fibres aligned in the same direction. Unlike CLT (cross laminated timber), which alternates grain direction and typically uses softwood, PLT maximises strength and stiffness along a single axis, producing highly predictable structural behaviour.

PLT elements are configured into a box-beam cassette: structural webs, integrated insulation, and Tasmanian Oak lining all precision-manufactured as a single unit. The cassettes are adaptable for walls, floors, or ceilings, and arrive on site ready for a single-lift installation.

Why CASE

  • Hardwood lining integrated at manufacture meaning minimal finishing trades required.
  • Factory-cut and pre-insulated panels compress the programme to lock-up.
  • Leans on significant experience gained in MASSLAM and with MASSLAM Design Team.
  • NCC 2022 compliant assemblies across climate zones 5–7.
  • Continuous insulation eliminates thermal bridging.
  • Sustainably sourced Australian hardwood, not imported softwood.
  • Lower embodied carbon than steel and concrete structural systems.
  • Precision factory manufacturing ensures design intent is delivered, not approximated.
  • Single system for walls, floors, and ceilings.
  • Australian-designed, grown, and manufactured.
