From the racetrack to the sports court, ASH’s Plantation Oak MASSLAM has been chosen as the mass engineered glulam at the heart of the new Albert Park Pit Building redevelopment.

A building designed for dual use, the Albert Park Pit Building will incorporate seven indoor sport courts and community clubrooms operating year-round, alongside world-class Formula One Australian Grand Prix facilities including 14 garages, a new media centre and premium hospitality spaces.

MASSLAM 38, designed and manufactured at ASH’s facilities in regional Victoria, is made from locally grown plantation hardwood. Initially grown for pulp, ASH has invested heavily in Plantation Oak and upgraded the fibre source into higher-value and sustainable construction materials.

Once complete, the new world-class venue will comprise almost 2000m3 of mass engineered timber, including 2150 individual MASSLAM beams and columns and 344 cassettes typically measuring 12m x 2.3m and prefabricated at ASH’s mill in Heyfield.

To put that into perspective, if you were to place every cassette and pre-spliced beam manufactured by ASH end-to-end, the timber would fit perfectly around Melbourne’s Formula One Grand Prix track. Talk about serendipitous symmetry!

Chosen for both structure and sustainable design, MASSLAM 38 brings structural efficiency, faster construction timelines, and a warmth of character that suits a building designed to serve both global spectacle and community gathering. It’s sustainability built right into the building.

This landmark project was designed by Woods Bagot, with Icon as head contractor.

It is a partnership between Development Victoria, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Parks Victoria, the State Sport Centres Trust and the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions (DJSIR). Development Victoria is delivering the project on behalf of DJSIR.

The redevelopment is due for completion in time for the 2028 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.
