Channel 9’s latest season of Renovate or Rebuild showcases the stunning range of ASH’s products including engineered timber flooring, staircase components and exterior cladding.

Renovate or Rebuild is a design and renovation show taking home owners looking to create the property dreams and presenting an option to either renovate their current dwelling or completely rebuild. Throughout this process, the show’s presenters take inspiration from existing projects to understand the capabilities and options available with different building materials based on the contestant’s design wishes.

Episode 4 (aired Saturday March 23, 2024) features a Victorian couple, Greg and Suzanne, who’ve chosen to rebuild their Flinders beach shack with a prefab, modular home. The couple’s design requirements included incorporating timber throughout the home to help enhance its coastal feel.

As Australia’s biggest timber manufacturer and supplier, the show looked no further than Australian Sustainable Hardwoods for inspiration on a number of timber products available and how they can be incorporated into any renovation or new home build.

ASH’s very own Michelle Zackor met with one of shows presenters, Jesse, to walk through The Sunhill in Glen Iris, Melbourne. It provides a magnificent example of working with timber across a variety of applications. In a calm and considered design, the owners of The Sunhill house wanted to create a sanctuary that connected the inside with external earthy and natural tones.

They achieved this by incorporating a number of ASHs products including engineered timber flooring. Our engineered flooring includes a 4mm top wear layer in either Tasmanian Oak or Glacial Oak pressed onto an 11mm plywood base providing a beautifully blonde appearance.

ASHs brand new flooring manufacturing line at our mill in Heyfield, Victoria, is the only pre-finished engineered flooring plant in Australia, producing 100% Australian made engineered flooring to the highest quality.

Glacial Oak, ASH’s brand of American Oak, is also featured extensively throughout The Sunhill with internal wall panelling, the staircase, ceiling panels, joinery and door seals. Glacial Oak provides a blonde and clean finish, with a unique swirly grain. The possibilities of this timber are extensive and allows homeowners to create a seamless look by matching multiple components within the home.

Externally, IronAsh shiplap cladding and battens were used for the front fence, façade and front door. The beauty of utilising timber externally is the ability to achieve different looks by either applying a coating to maintain a warm appearance or leaving it uncoated, allowing the timber to achieve a beautiful, weathered, grey look, something Suzanne specifically desired for their new home.

A major benefit to using timber in any building project is the ability to achieve a cohesive look alongside other building materials such as brick and concrete given its versatile, natural and calming effects.
