CURIOUS PRACTICE
“Cadeau takes domestic architectural elements and plays with their scale; exaggerating and fusing components to create a new, shared narrative between site, installation and those who visit it”
A new large-scale installation has been unveiled as part of the Powerhouse Architecture Commission at the MAAS Museum in Sydney. For the past three years, the commission has provided emerging Australian architects with an opportunity to design and build innovative projects.
2022’s commission Cadeau is no exception, designed by Newcastle-based studio Curious Practice, the modular installation was created in collaboration with engineering firm Arup and ASH.
Cadeau was constructed using ASH’s brand of American Oak – Glacial Oak – and finished with a black Rubio Woodcream. The deep black coating creatively highlighting the beautiful swirl of the back sawn grain in the American Oak.
Glacial Oak is unique to Australia. It is handpicked by region and colour, processed in Victoria, graded and packed to meet Australian standards – unlike anything else available here. Read more about the timber on the Glacial Oak webpage.
POWERHOUSE CURATOR
“Cadeau is not a ‘stand-alone’ building or singular gesture. The architects responded to the commission brief with a modular, movable pavilion that can be enjoyed by either individuals or large groups”
