Gordon Street Reserve is a central hub for the community of Heyfield, home to the local football, netball, basketball and cricket clubs. Earlier this year Katz Architecture, employed by Wellington Shire Council, rejuvenated this well-deserved pavilion.

Katz Architecture is a design based practise in Melbourne that delivers high-quality sustainable design. Paul Katz, the director of Katz Architecture explained this project as “a community-focused sports pavilion that was given a fresh lease on life with new and upgraded features. The new and existing facade is expressed with timber battens wrapped around the building creating a strong and inviting presence to the pavilion”.

This project is very close to our hearts, as our head office and mill are also located in the heart of Heyfield. This community is such a caring, supportive group of people, so we wanted to give a little back to the town that has given us so much. ASH donated a portion of IronAsh timber battens covering the pavilion, the GoodWood solid timber benches and AlpineOak timber flooring.

Katz Architecture thought it was important to celebrate and support local businesses throughout the design. Katz explained “A primary design feature to the pavilion is a series of locally produced timber battens running vertically across and wrapping around the facade of the building. The screen defines the presence of the overall building whilst expressing the entry and striking new roof form”.

The Gordon Street Reserve transformation is one that the entire community of Heyfield can be proud of and enjoy for years to come.
