The Space

Transforming a Victorian terrace into a modern family home featuring a muted palette, clean finishes and GoodWood Victorian ash.

SANDBOX STUDIO / amazing architecture

“Paddo Terrace is now a light-filled modern family home, with a sense of spaciousness beyond its small footprint. By co-creating with the clients, we designed a house that supports their lifestyle and aspirations and is sympathetic to the Victorian-era architecture and streetscape.”

Located in the suburb of Paddington, Sydney, Paddo Terrace is an addition and alterations project built around a Victorian era home. Like many other terrace houses in the street, behind the classic two-storey heritage façade was a narrow and dark interior with no connection to the outdoors. Posing a challenge due to a site width of only 3.5 metres, the result is a sleek, light-filled and open space with elements of character from the original home.

The residence was designed by Sandbox Studio, a co-creative architecture studio specialising in the design and documentation of new residences, renovations, alterations and additions, interior fit-outs, as well as multi-residential and commercial projects. The clients, a young professional couple, engaged the studio with a simple brief, ‘to transform a rundown Victorian terrace into a modern home, increasing the space and light and restoring its heritage character’. Priding themselves on collaboration with clients, the team at Sandbox Studio delivered all this and more.

Highlighting the capabilities of a natural palette, the modern home features a GoodWood Victorian ash staircase along with GoodWood battens for a practical yet visually balanced space. Chosen for being a native Australian hardwood and its distinct warm tone, the blonde timber pairs harmoniously with the clean finishes, natural light and exposed brick wall featured throughout.

GoodWood Victorian ash is our range of high-quality, quarter sawn Victorian ash available in a range of staircase components including treads, stringers, balustrades and risers. Processed at our world class facility in Heyfield, our GoodWood is internally scanned, straight line edged and defect docked to produce the market’s best appearance grade timber. “The open staircase … is designed to filter light throughout the house as well as breeze and sightlines. The [GoodWood] Victorian ash timber creates a feeling of warmth and complements the original brick wall, which has been exposed to add texture and retain character. ”
