“Autumn House attempts to negotiate the need for refuge, retreat, and privacy with generosity and engagement with the urban context. The project balances the architecture of the original Victorian terrace, a 1980’s renovation by architect Mick Jörgensen with a new contribution by our studio”
Autumn House is a family home built around a Victorian terrace with a 1980’s renovation by architect Mick Jörgensen. Reflective of the name, Autumn House incorporates an extension built to hero the mature elm tree and autumn colours spaced throughout the courtyard. The existing Victorian terrace is connected to the new site with a brick wall, contrasting the new bright and open build which receives northern light, defined by the glazed timber windows and doors.
Designed by Studio Bright, Autumn House encapsulates their philosophy of ‘every project is an opportunity to contribute in a positive and generous way to the social and built fabric of our cities’. Soft and subtle materiality encases the home, utilising curves to create a restrained flow throughout the space.
The new form includes living, kitchen and dining spaces, a main bedroom, rooftop deck and an activity space at the front of site. Floor to ceiling timber windows and doors open up to the backyard, inviting light and greenery into the space.
The design showcases GoodWood, ASH’s brand of Victorian ash that ensures consistency of quality and colour across several applications. ASH is one of Australia’s largest timber manufacturers, which allows us to produce a range of profiles in the one timber. Autumn House took advantage of this by featuring an unapparelled balance of GoodWood windows and doors, lining and stairs, beautifully executed and creating a harmonious flow of design.
Autumn House is the winner of 4 categories at the 2022 Houses Awards for House of the Year, House Alteration and Addition Over 200m2, Garden/Landscape and House in a Heritage Context.
“[GoodWood] Victorian Ash was selected due to the warm and pink tones of the timber which complements the autumnal material palette throughout the project. Our studio seeks to utilise locally sourced and sustainable materials where possible and Victorian Ash, being a native hardwood species, is a great option”
