The Space

Inside a timeless and tranquil home filled with natural light, warm finishes and a palette of Australian timbers.

HOUSES AWARDS

“Court House explores the intersecting notions of heritage and sustainability within Australian society, specifically the Yackandandah community and its surrounding landscape. It was built with the belief that in building a house, the most sustainable thing we can do is to focus on its physical, cultural and social longevity.”

Located in the small town of Yackandandah, in North East Victoria, Court House is a retro inspired home sensitive to its place. Considering the local community, Colonial history and landscape of the Dhudhuroa people, the design is based on an emphasis of craft, longevity and using materials from the surrounding areas. The design is simple, featuring a restrained palette consisting of concrete finishes, black detailing and blonde Australian timbers throughout.

The home was designed by Melbourne-based practice, Archier, who focus on creating design experiences that contribute to a better quality of life and allow for families to grow and live better together. The award winning practice is recognised for its design excellence and commitment to sustainability, reflective of their portfolio made up of residential, commercial and government architecture as well as public and private landscape projects, many of which strongly feature our GoodWood Victorian ash and IronAsh.

Coming from a family of avid gardeners, it was important for the client to have a garden as a defining feature of the home. Constructed around a central courtyard, the home is surrounded by large scale windows allowing all areas of the home to look into the strategically placed courtyard and provide a sense of calmness to the space.

Making the most of natural light and breath-taking scenery that comes with being located atop a steep hill, Court House features floor to ceiling GoodWood Victorian ash windows by Binq Windows. Our timber paired with double glazing creates the optimal solution for windows and doors due to its high thermal efficiency for a comfortable internal climate year-round. Manufactured at our world class facility in Heyfield, GoodWood Victorian ash is hard-wearing, strong and visually stunning. BINQ WINDOWS

“Designed to maximise natural light and breathtaking scenery, most of the walls of this home are filled with large panes of glass. The home features three Archetto Lift Slide doors which allow the home to be opened up and filled with the clean, unpolluted air.”
