Large community projects aren’t always easy, and like Fleurieu Aquatic Centre, can take decades to plan. Yet, the reward makes it all worth while.

The Fleurieu Aquatic Centre has been an incredible 30 years in the making, with the Alexandrina Council, City of Victor Harbour, Hames Sharley Architects, DWP Suter Architects and Kennett builders at the heart of this build. 85km’s south of Adelaide, Alexandrina residents are enjoying their newly built $21m aquatic centre that includes all the features you’d expect from a modern sports and recreation facility.

What made this community project even more unique, was the fact that the City of Victor Harbor and the Alexandrina Council worked together to build this infrastructure due to the location of the site. The outstanding collaboration between the two councils is clearly reflected in the success of this space.

Timber played a major role in both the design and build of this centre. “Originally Spotted Gum was specified and, although an attractive timber, we were concerned about the possible staining of concrete and tiled areas. Much investigation took us to IronAsh and we have not been disappointed” as explained by David Moyle, Aquatic Centre Project Management the Alexandrina Council.

The IRON ASH supplied in this project included 200×200 posts, 190×45 Supa17 and 90×45 Supa 17. David Moyle further explains “These timbers were used over a range of features including shade structure columns and horizontal timbers, vertical dressing of fencing, over the main building entry, 2 entry statements and to build a number of compounds”.

IronAsh uses innovative technology to combine a transparent combination of water based additives deep into the core of GoodWood Victorian ash. Visit the IronAsh webpage for more information on this revolutionary exterior option.
