A kitchen represents the heart of a home – it is a space for loved ones to come together to enjoy food, wine and conversation. Designing a kitchen is not an easy feat for any architect… especially if it’s fora chef – and in this case for world-renowned Scott Pickett and his family.

Scott made the clever decision to appoint MRTN Architects for the job, and boy did they deliver. MRTN Architects are a design focused architecture and interior design firm based in Melbourne. Their philosophy states ‘we enjoy getting to know our clients and working with them to arrive at an outcome together. This process should satisfy what is required of the brief and the desires for the project but also create something unexpected and wonderful’.

Named the ‘Rathmines House’, this project included “the addition and renovation of this weatherboard bungalow, which created connections to the garden from new living areas that face east and north, benefiting from abundant natural light” as explained by Antony from MRTN. The kitchen was designed as the central focus so it can be used for day to day family use and for entertaining – an absolute priority for any chef.

Windows not only provide light and warmth to a design, but also act as an architectural feature. GOODWOOD Victorian ash was the timber chosen for the window and doors because of its strength, durability and consistent colour. Antony further explains “Vic ash window and door frames were selected for the their warm tones, which complimented the timber used throughout the project”. McKay Joinery were responsible for the manufacturing the windows and doors and Lew Building installed them.McKay were selected because of their high quality craftsmanship and custom built joinery.

Timber windows and doors made from GOODWOOD Victorian ash are arguably the best on the market – they are an energy efficient material, are quarter sawn for stability and they have superior insulation properties to other materials like aluminum, steel and concrete. The team at MRTN architects chose Victorian ash for many different reasons, including”for the wonderful thermal benefits of using timber window frames”.
