“The Pavilion Performing Arts Centre reimagines the previous Sutherland Entertainment Centre, preserving aspects of the former building while creating a contemporary new public venue with ameliorated functions to cater for a diversity of cultural and technical needs”

Located in the Sutherland Shire, The Pavilion Performing Arts Centre is a new home of performing arts. Previously known as the Sutherland Entertainment Centre, the existing venue saw a welcoming upgrade that includes an abundance of natural light, park-views and an enhancement to audience experience.

The reimagination was the outcome of CHROFI and NBRS who were responsible for transforming the iconic 40-year-old entertainment centre into a space that sets a new benchmark for performing arts facilities in NSW. With a $44 million investment, The Pavilion is now the premier performing arts centre in Sydney’s south, strengthening local and regional cultural values and connecting the community to entertainment and the arts.

Welcoming visitors to an exciting selection of Australian and international entertainment is a timber and glass foyer connected to the neighbouring Peace Park. Bridging inside and out through materiality and a ‘verandah’ inspired design are our MASSLAM 45 columns standing 11m tall.

The structure pays homage to its heritage roots by incorporating a grid-like design comprised of mass timber, intentionally chosen to replicate the geometry and shape of the existing masonry building.

CHROFI & NBRS

“The crafted timber foyer brings a sense of warmth and blurs the connection between inside and outside, creating a structure that belongs as much to the park as it does to the Theatre”

MASSLAM DESIGN TEAM

“The speed of prefabricated mass timber structures compared with surrounding materials highlights the advantage of a reduced programme with just a small team of riggers and carpenters on site. No need to sacrifice quality for speed on site when you can have both and concealed connections that still offer the required robustness.”

MASSLAM plays a critical role in the building’s construction, with over 84m3 of MASSLAM 45 members supplied to the project in a variety of sizes ranging up to 1260 x 210mm.

MASSLAM is a range of mass timber column, beams, floor and roof systems available in a variety of Australian hardwoods and softwoods. The attractive glue-laminated timber solution offers many benefits including faster installation speeds attributed to DfMA, paired with the fact that mass timber is lighter, easier, safer to handle and install compared to traditional building materials like concrete and steel.
