“Modest in scale and footprint, this materially rich home was designed and built with an emphasis on creating liveable, high quality spaces by utilising simple, robust volumes, tactile and practical surfaces and strong connections to the landscape and the seasons”
Nestled on the south-eastern edge of the Mornington Peninsula, Monterey House explores materiality while placing emphasis on achieving a simple, practical and high quality space. Designed specifically for a young family, the home is adorned in materials rich in warmth and texture that allow the home to grow and evolve.
The Melbourne-based architectural practice Insider Outsider were the visionaries behind this distinctive home. With an extensive portfolio of residential projects, the team at Insider Outsider strive to ‘make purposeful, tactile and enduring architecture that creates and sustains strong connections between people and the communities, landscapes and structures they inhabit’.
Named after the Californian county for its connection to pine trees amongst the shoreline, the design explores a bond between home and landscape. The simple brief asked for a sustainable, well-performing home, so choosing a palette with an emphasis on timber was an obvious choice. The internal spaces feature the perfect mix of blonde timbers including our beloved GoodWood, Australian Oak and Glacial Oak (ASH’s brand of American Oak).
Glacial Oak was used for the furniture and joinery, showcasing a unique crown-cut grain and warm tones to match the natural aesthetic of the home. To pair with the Glacial Oak is our GoodWood lining, our range of Victorian ash and Tasmanian Oak known for it’s blonde colour and workability. Processed in Victoria, both ranges are blonde, straight, stable and can be used harmoniously in conjunction with one another. Learn more about Glacial Oak and GoodWood.
Completing the timber palette is our Australian Oak engineered flooring – which is soon to be 100% Australian made right here at our Heyfield site. Made using a 4mm GoodWood top wear layer, Australian Oak can be easily used to complement our other timber ranges and applications. Keep up to date with our Australian Oak updates here.

“It was critical to the integrity of the project that a suite of local timber products would sit together beautifully from an aesthetic point of view, were fit for purpose in each of their roles, and would be of a high level of quality and consistency. The selected ASH products fulfilled these requirements, and in combination they strongly contribute to the warmth and feeling of the space”
